In Memory of Mark Lanegan

Mark William Lanegan (November 25, 1964 – February 22, 2022)

Sad news hit me today that Mark Lanegan has passed, at a mere 57 years of age. Cause of death is unknown at this time. In March, 2021 he caught an exotic new strain of the coronavirus for which there was no cure. He eventually got hospitalised for months. Unable to draw oxygen, he was put into a coma, with slim chances of survival. He managed to pull through and told the story himself in a memoir titled Devil in a Coma. It's of course really sad to see him go less than a year later, after finally getting better, and my deep condolences go out to all his loved ones.

Extensive Career With Many Collaborations

Anyone new to Mark Lanegan, he was the frontman of the '90s grunge era band Screaming Trees between 1985 and 2000. He later joined Queens of the Stone Age for a while and also had his own band Mark Lanegan Band. He also collaborated with numerous other acts, including PJ Harvey and Moby. He was a creative force to be reckoned with, having music released even in 2021; the same year as he suffered from severe covid.

The video below features a nice overview of some of his music and collaborative work.

The next video covers some other aspects of his career, including a feud with Oasis's Liam Gallagher that started in the '90s which has continued on to some degree even in recent years.

Mark really had a distinct voice and it's sad to lose yet another big name of that grungy era, just a few years after losing both Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) and Chris Cornell (Soundgarden).

On a personal level, he and I also shared birthdays!
