Royal Blood - Groovy Drum & Bass Rock

Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher of Royal Blood.

UK alternative rock duo Royal Blood is on a great wave of success and has quite a unique sound. It's not the only band to make rock music with just two instruments. Bands like The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Kills as well as fellow brits Blood Red Shoes work around the same kind of constraints, but typically with guitar and drums as a basis.

Royal Blood takes a different approach and ditches the guitar in favour of the bass guitar, much like Canadian noise-rockers Death From Above 1979. While Death From Above brings noise and chaos, Royal Blood's music has more of a thick, bluesy sound to it. And in some ways, they sound somewhat similar to The White Stripes. Bassist and vocalist Mike Kerr also often sings in a quite high register, which might also bring Jack White to one's mind.

How to Sound Like Royal Blood

To be honest, as I was listening to some of their tracks, it took me quite a while before even figuring out that all the guitar work is actually played on a bass. With the use of various effect pedals, bassist and vocalist Mike Kerr manage to create quite convincing guitar sounds, with the use of an octave pedal. Apparently, the Electro-Harmonix POG2 is the key, combined with the Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi for the fuzz/distortion. Kerr also switches back and forth between the "guitary" and bassy sound which is pretty cool.

The New Album "Typhoons"

The latest album Typhoons also blends some disco elements into the mix. Something that according to the band comes from partying to Daft Punk and disco music after their gigs. So they figured: why not start the party already at the stage?

I find the new album a bit more upbeat than the previous ones as well and is quite an exciting listen. Definitely check it out if you haven't!
