We got the shocking and disheartening news from Rockfeed recently that 49 year-old blink-182 bassist and co-vocalist Mark Hoppus has been battling cancer since three months back, which would date the start of it to March 2021.
More in the short video below:
Rock Today would of course like to wish Mark a speedy and strong recovery and hope to see him rocking again soon. In his statement on social media, he's trying to remain positive and hopeful, and we need to as well. Wishing you all the best, Mark!
About a decade ago, his former bandmate Tom DeLonge also revealed he's had skin cancer a year prior. As he states in this video, he had already been cured, fortunately.
Long-Awaited Reunion
I first heard blink-182 in 1999 with the Enema of the State album and its many hit singles on heavy rotation on TV. Many fans love the works of the original line-up with Tom DeLonge especially and have wished for them to reunite. And I still think that might happen. Even though there's been some rivalry between Mark and Tom in the past, there doesn't seem to be any bad blood between the two these days.
That said, I also think the band's new stuff with Matt Skiba is really good as well, and with the latest album NINE especially, they show they're still very much relevant as a band. Being an Alkaline Trio fan as well I might be a tad biased, but I think Matt was a great addition to the band. And should blink ever reunite with Tom, I'd hope for Matt to stay as well. Having two guitars in the band rather than one would only help develop their sound even further, letting them add more leads and harmonies, etc.
Apart from being a founding member of blink-182, Mark Hoppus is also known from the bands +44 (2005–2009) and Simple Creatures, a duo formed in 2019, together with Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low.
Anyway, stay strong and courageous, Mark! All the best!
